DIAMONDS

In jewelry, the most common form of diamond cutting is the round cut, known as brilliant. This term refers to a round cut with at least 57 facets and an added lower table. The widespread use of this cut has led to a misunderstanding: the public tends to equate the terms brilliant and diamond as if they were the same thing.
In practice, the term brilliant, when used alone, identifies only the round-cut diamond. However, there are many other precious stones that can be cut as brilliant, such as rubies, sapphires, and topazes.

PURITY

  • FL = Flawless - No internal or external inclusions of any kind visible at 10x magnification from an expert eye. It is the highest level of purity, corresponding to the rarest and most expensive stones.
  • IF = Internally Flawless - No internal inclusions visible at 10x magnification from an expert eye, but there may be some very small external imperfections in the finish.
  • VVS-1 = Very Very Small Inclusions 1 - Usually this refers to a single very small inclusion visible at 10x magnification only from an expert eye.
  • VVS-2 = Very Very Small Inclusions 2 - Very small inclusions visible at 10x magnification only from an expert eye.
  • VS-1 = Very Small Inclusions 1 - Very small inclusions visible at 10x magnification.
  • VS-2 = Very Small Inclusions 2 - Numerous very small inclusions visible at 10x magnification.
  • SI-1 = Small Inclusions 1 - Small inclusions visible at 10x magnification.
  • SI-2 = Small Inclusions 2 - Numerous small inclusions visible at 10x magnification.
  • SI-3 = Slightly Inclusions 3 - Inclusions visible to the naked eye only by an expert observer.
  • I-1 = Included 1 - Inclusions visible to the naked eye.
  • I-2 = Included 2 - Many distinctly visible inclusions to the naked eye, decreasing the brilliance of the diamond.
  • I-3 = Included 3 - Many distinctly visible inclusions to the naked eye that not only decrease the brilliance, but also compromise the structure of the diamond, making it more fragile.

COLOR

There is a scale upon which we base descriptions of the subtle nuances of a stone′s color. The letter D refers to perfectly colorless stones, which are the rarest and most expensive. Moving from D to Z, yellow and/or brown tones gradually increase.
Only an experienced observer under particular lighting conditions is able to see the difference between two successive levels like E and F.
The colors exceed the traditional color scale and are separately classified in terms of color and price.

CUTTING

Perfectly proportioned round diamonds almost always exhibit the highest levels of brilliance and symmetry, highlighting the extreme care put into their crafting.
The skill and expertise used to execute this cut result in a diamond of superior beauty.
Ideal cut diamonds are usually much more expensive than those cut differently.
